Polyethylene
Polyethylene Foam is a class of thermoplastics practically everywhere in consumer products.
It is produced through the polymerisation of ethylene. During the process chains of ethylene stick together through weak Van der Waals forces.
It comes in different densities and material properties by using different catalysts during the process.
Gas Blown and Chemically Blown
Polyethylene Foams are:
- Non abrasive
- Serve as a thermal insulator
- Inert to water, grease and solvents at typical temperatures
- Are CFC_ free
- Ozone friendly
- Odourless
-
Very lightweight
They can be used for:
- Packaging
- Vibration dampening
- Insulation
- As a barrier
- Material for cushioning
- Buoyancy (nautical)
They also come in a wide range of colours
